Key Takeaways and Conversation Highlights from Shaping the Future of Legal AI
On August 22, 2025, just before IP Week, we held our event Shaping the Future of Legal AI joined by participants from across industries, not only legal, but also finance, RegTech, and more. We were honored to be joined by Chiew Yu Sarn (Co-Managing Director, Yusarn Audrey LLC) as our guest speaker, alongside our CEO & Founder, Alfred Wu, and Vincent Chen our Senior Growth Manager. Together they shared insights on how AI is reshaping legal practices. The event became a shared conversation on the importance of trust, control, and data privacy, trade-offs between cloud and edge, and how AI can assist professionals while adapting to the evolving compliance needs. Here are the key takeaways and highlights from those discussions. AI and the Question of Fairness “When we delegate a function of justice to a machine, is it going to be fair?” That was the question raised by Chiew Yu Sarn to open the discussion. When technology assumes roles tied to people’s rights and responsibilities, society must ask whether those outcomes can truly be trusted. AI can certainly make work faster and more consistent. But fairness is a different challenge; it depends on empathy and judgment, qualities machines don’t have. AI’s role in legal practice is not about replacement, but assistance. By taking on repetitive, time-consuming tasks, AI enables lawyers to focus on what matters most: applying judgment, developing strategy, and building stronger relationships with their clients. Beyond questions of fairness, the discussion also turned to the technical choices legal teams face when adopting AI. Cloud vs. Edge Trade-off When adopting AI, legal teams face a choice. Cloud offers massive data scale and flexibility, but raises concerns around confidentiality. Edge, by contrast, keeps data secure, private, and under direct control. The right balance depends on each team’s priorities. Edge AI Means Ownership Edge AI gives legal professionals true ownership of their tools and data. With no reliance on cloud, it minimizes privacy risks and ensures compliance without compromise for sensitive work to stay fully within the team’s governance. This raised an important point: for legal teams, data governance is not just technical, but central to client trust. As Alfred Wu, CEO & Founder of AIPLUX, emphasized during the event, “Edge AI means your data stays where it belongs, under your governance and in your control.” The Future is Collaborative The strongest outcomes won’t come from AI or humans working alone, but from working together. Lawyers bring judgment, ethics, and an understanding of people, while AI adds speed, scale, and the ability to process information with consistency. As Vincent Chen pointed out, trust also depends on transparency. With many cloud-based systems, such as OpenAI, users can’t always be sure whether their data is stored or how it might be used. That uncertainty makes it difficult for legal teams to rely fully on the results, which is why auditability is essential. With transparency, human expertise and AI efficiency can genuinely work side by side Where We Go from Here The outlook for legal AI is about responsible adoption of tools that assist without risking privacy, privilege, or regulatory compliance. That’s how legal teams can embrace AI with confidence. Edge AI makes this possible by keeping sensitive data private, reducing reliance on external cloud services, and ensuring compliance stays fully under your control. Its value extends beyond law into research, academia, finance, healthcare, and other fields where trust and governance are essential. Introduction to Edge AI
The Great GPT is Down Again… We’ve all been there: the Wi-Fi light on your router blinks red just when you need AI the most. Everyone is relying on it, but suddenly nothing is working. Your IP counsel is waiting for AI to help re-draft that office-action response before the patent office closes. Meanwhile, the strategy leads are lined up for an updated valuation of the company’s global IP portfolio, the crucial numbers that the board needs tonight. In-house counsel just uploaded 200 pages of licensing redlines to an AI model, hoping it can spot any sneaky edits from the other side. But with the AI models running in the cloud and the network on pause, everything slows down. The cloud systems are processing, but without a stable connection, they’re unable to keep up. As deadlines approach, the pressure builds, and your systems struggle to deliver results in time. Then, you look over at the sleek black cube sitting next to your monitor. Its fans are quietly humming, the lights are blinking, and you realize: this tiny cube never stops working. Even offline, it’s still busy! It’s analyzing office-action PDFs, analyzing trademark risks, and even drafting recommendations. It’s calculating portfolio values and creating reports for Finance. It’s checking every clause in that 200-page licensing document, spotting even the smallest changes that could cost the company big. No cloud. No uploads. Just smart AI that works right where your data is. That’s Edge AI, bringing the power of AI directly to the documents instead of sending everything to the cloud. It’s local, fast, secure, and efficient. When the network’s down, Edge AI keeps running, doing everything you need right there! In the next part of this article, we’ll break down exactly what Edge AI is, how it works, and why more teams who can’t afford delays or security risks are putting the cloud ‘on pause’ and letting the cube keep working. In an age where data privacy and governance are critical, businesses need technology that allows them to process data locally and maintain control. Edge AI does just that by bringing artificial intelligence directly to devices, allowing real-time decision-making without sending sensitive data to the cloud. In this article, we’ll dive into what Edge AI is, how it works, and why it’s becoming an essential solution for companies prioritizing data privacy and compliance. What is Edge AI? Edge AI or Edge Artificial Intelligence is all about bringing the power of AI directly to your devices such as local servers or workstations, instead of relying on the cloud. Instead of sending your data to the cloud for processing, Edge AI keeps it close by, processing data right where it’s created (on-premises). This process makes it very useful for companies dealing with important and sensitive information, as the data stays within your control and isn’t sent out to the cloud. Edge AI is the deployment of AI applications in devices throughout the physical world. It’s called “edge AI” because the AI computation is done near the user at the edge of the network, close to where the data is located, rather than centrally in a cloud computing facility or private data center. – NVIDIA Blog In short, Edge AI means doing all the AI functions right on your devices, without needing constant internet access. Whether it’s a server or GPU, it’s about keeping things local near the source of your data for faster, safer, and more efficient processing. How Does Edge AI Work? Edge AI combines edge computing and AI by deploying optimized machine learning models on devices at the network’s edge. These devices collect data and perform AI inference locally using specialized hardware and efficient software frameworks tailored for low power and limited computational resources. For example, an autonomous vehicle’s onboard system processes sensor data instantly to make driving decisions without needing to send data to the cloud. While edge devices handle immediate processing, the cloud is still used for training complex AI models and updating them on edge devices when needed. This hybrid setup balances real-time responsiveness with the power of centralized AI training Benefits of Edge AI Edge AI and Cloud AI represent two distinct approaches to deploying artificial intelligence, each with unique strengths and challenges. While Edge AI processes data locally on devices near the data source, enabling real-time decision-making with low latency and enhanced privacy, Cloud AI relies on powerful centralized servers to handle large-scale data processing and complex model training. Understanding these differences is crucial for choosing the right AI strategy, as factors like latency, bandwidth, data privacy, scalability, and cost vary significantly. Category Edge AI Cloud AI Data Privacy Important/sensitive data never leaves your network. Full custody over your data. Data in your cloud tenancy. You control VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) and IAM (Identity and Access Management). Data Security Your firewalls, Hardware Security Modules (HSMs), and Security Information and Event Management (SIEM). All in-house patch cycles. Hyperscale provider security + your OS/app controls. Regulation Easiest path for compliance such as GDPR, CCPA & ABA Model Rules audits. Choosing the right region and checking provider certifications (like FedRAMP, ISO, etc. Pricing Initial capital investment (CapEx) followed by ongoing operational expenses (OpEx) like power, cooling, and staff costs. Choose between on-demand or reserved instances, and keep an eye on egress fees. Risk You bear hardware, Disaster Recovery (DR) & insider-threat risk. Shared responsibility: the provider handles infrastructure disaster recovery (DR), while you’re responsible for configuration. Data Integration Direct access to file shares, private APIs, and on-premises ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes. Native cloud data storage with managed ETL (like Dataflow and others. Scaling Scale by adding GPUs or servers, keeping in mind lead time and budget. Auto-scale VM or GPU fleets, with cost monitoring required. Control Absolute: patch cadence, retention policy, network segmentation. High: VM and network policies, with hardware abstraction. Transparency Complete logs, metrics & audit trails for e-discovery. INTA 2025 Highlights: The Growing Need for Secure AI in IP
Reflecting on International Trademark Administration (INTA) Annual Meeting 2025, we’ve gained some invaluable insights that have left us thinking deeply about the direction of AI in the intellectual property space. As we engaged with the attendees, it became clear that security, accuracy, and privacy are top concerns when it comes to integrating AI into IP workflows. While AI is increasingly being talked about as a game-changer, there’s still a significant trust gap, especially when it comes to the handling of sensitive data. A large portion of our conversations revolved around the challenges of cloud-based AI solutions. Many legal professionals voiced concerns about the risk of client data being exposed, as well as the potential for inaccurate or unreliable results, particularly when using AI models like ChatGPT for IP work. These concerns were not just about privacy but also about the integrity of their work and the protection of their clients’ intellectual property. What stood out to us the most was how urgently the market is asking for AI solutions that offer more control and security. The fear of data being compromised or mishandled was real, and it’s clear that knowledge professionals want AI that they can trust to operate securely, accurately, and privately. This is exactly why we built Agent Cube, an offline on-premises AI (EDGE AI) solution designed with privacy and compliance in mind. By processing data locally and drawing insights from your own database and eliminates the need for cloud-based services that leave sensitive data vulnerable. It was amazing to see the positive feedback we received from those who were looking for exactly what our EDGE AI offers, which is an offline AI solution that gives them full control over their data, ensures accuracy with no hallucinations, and complies with strict legal and regulatory standards. The feedback we gathered at INTA 2025 reinforced our mission to provide secure, offline AI solutions that help professionals in the IP space work with confidence. Your Comprehensive Guide to Trademarks
Trademarks are a crucial element of a business’s Intellectual Property strategy, offering legal protection, market differentiation, and adding value to the brand. Conducting a thorough trademark analysis before applying not only increases the chances of successful registration but also provides strategic insights for effective branding. In today’s fast-paced market, securing a trademark is a strategic move that every business owner should consider. Trademarks not only safeguard your brand’s identity but also enhance consumer trust, making your products or services stand out in a crowded marketplace. By ensuring legal protection, boosting brand recognition, and increasing business value, trademarks play a pivotal role in your intellectual property portfolio. Let’s explore how this key aspect of intellectual property can be a game-changer for your brand. Legal Protection A trademark secures legal exclusivity for the use of your brand’s name, logo, or slogan, protecting it from unauthorized use by competitors. This protection is critical for safeguarding your brand identity and ensuring that only you can capitalize on your brand’s reputation and goodwill. Brand Recognition Trademarks facilitate brand recognition in the marketplace. A distinctive mark helps customers easily identify and prefer your products or services over those of your competitors, thereby fostering brand loyalty. Business Valuation & Growth Trademarks can significantly increase the value of your business. They are considered valuable assets that can enhance your company’s worth, appeal to investors, and play a pivotal role in mergers and acquisitions. Consumer Trust and Loyalty Trademarks can foster a sense of quality and consistency among consumers. They know what to expect from a trademarked brand, which can build loyalty and trust over time. Marketing Advantage A strong trademark can be a powerful marketing tool. It conveys the message, values, and quality of your products or services, aiding in advertising and branding efforts. Market Expansion Trademarks can pave the way for market expansion through licensing agreements or franchising, allowing others to use your trademark under defined conditions. This can lead to new revenue streams without the need for direct market entry. Before you take the leap into trademarking your brand, imagine having a roadmap that not only guides you through the dense forest of existing trademarks but also highlights potential legal pitfalls and opportunities for unique brand positioning. That’s precisely the advantage of conducting a trademark analysis before you apply. It’s like having a seasoned guide by your side, ensuring you make informed, strategic decisions that protect your brand and pave the way for a smoother registration process. Let’s dive deeper into why this step is so crucial. Risk Reduction Analysis helps in identifying potential conflicts with existing trademarks. This reduces the risk of infringement issues that could result in costly legal disputes or the necessity to rebrand. Strategic Planning Trademark analysis can inform your branding strategy. It helps in understanding the competitive landscape and identifying trademarks that are already in use, enabling you to create a distinct and protectable brand identity. Higher Success Rate in Registration Conducting thorough analysis increases the likelihood of your trademark application being approved. Knowing the landscape helps in choosing a mark that is unique and unlikely to be rejected due to similarities with existing marks. Time & Cost Efficiency Investing in trademark analysis upfront can save money in the long run by avoiding the time and costs associated with rebranding efforts, dispute resolution, and lost market share due to an ineffective trademark strategy. Market Insights The analysis process can provide valuable insights into current market trends and consumer perceptions. This information can be crucial for aligning your brand strategically within the market. Embark on your trademark analysis journey with AIPLUX, your navigator through the complex seas of intellectual property protection. In just four simple steps, we’ll guide your brand to unique recognition and legal safeguarding, making the process a smooth sail towards generating a comprehensive risk analysis report. Let’s break down the four simple steps: Identify Your Industry Start by pinpointing the exact industry where your goods or services shine. This is like choosing the right path on your treasure map, guiding you towards your goal! Select Your Trademark Type It’s time to choose your brand’s symbol! Decide if your trademark will be a ‘Logo with words’, a ‘Logo without words’, or a simple yet powerful ‘Name (word mark)’. Think of this as choosing your flag to hoist high on your business ship! Detail Your Goods & Services Tell us the treasure you offer! What are the unique goods or services you’re presenting to your customers? This is like listing the cargo on your ship, making sure it’s all accounted for. Specify Your Territory Now, chart your course by defining where you wish to sail. In other words, decide the jurisdictions where you want your trademark to be recognized and protected. This ensures your ship can safely navigate these waters without fear of pirates (a.k.a. competitors)!

From Taipei Game Show to Global Success: Essential Intellectual Property (IP) Strategies for Indie Game Developers
Mastering trademark strategies can elevate your indie game’s global presence and open doors to increased revenue through brand recognition and licensing opportunities. By protecting your game’s unique identity, you’re not just securing legal rights but you’re paving the way for a successful international launch! The Taipei Game Show which will be held on January 25-28th , 2024 in TaiNEX 1 Taipei – Taiwan, is an annual event that garners attention from across the global gaming industry. For game developers, particularly indie studios and emerging players, this event is more than a showcase, it’s a gateway to international markets where the role of trademarks becomes more important. Securing a trademark not only protects a game within local markets but also serves as a foundational step for global expansion. Why Trademark Matters in Video Games In the gaming industry, trademarks extend far beyond protecting a game’s title or logo, they encompass a wider range of intellectual property aspects. These trademarks are more than just legal instruments, they are crucial components of a game’s brand identity and market positioning. They safeguard various elements of a game, including its title, logo, names of characters, and even unique catchphrases. In a highly competitive market, the right trademark can set a game apart, elevating it from being just another title in the market to a widely recognized brand. Effective trademark protection not only preserves a game’s unique identity but also its creative core, a critical aspect in an industry rich with creativity and competition. For indie game developers, transforming a simple idea into a brand that’s acknowledged worldwide is a challenging yet essential journey. Having a trademark enhances a game’s credibility and attractiveness to potential distributors and collaborators that signals professionalism and commitment. A Roadmap to Trademark Strategy Conduct Comprehensive Research Before applying for a trademark, conduct thorough research to ensure your game’s title or logo doesn’t infringe on existing trademarks. This includes searching international databases, utilize international trademark databases like WIPO’s Global Brand Database, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to search for existing trademarks. Copyright and Trademark DistinctionsIt’s important to understand the difference between copyright and trademark protection. While trademarks protect brand identifiers like names and logos, copyrights protect creative works within the game, such as artwork, music, and storylines. Both forms of protection are crucial for a game’s success. Understanding Trademark ClassificationVideo games fall primarily under Class 009 of the Nice Classification, covering computer software. However, it’s crucial to recognize that different aspects of a game, like its machinery, may be classified differently, such as under Class 028. Recognizing the correct classification is vital for effective IP protection. Understanding Regional DifferencesTrademark laws vary significantly across different countries. What’s protected in one may not be in another. For instance, some countries operate on a “first-to-use” basis, while others are “first-to-file.” Furthermore, be aware of cultural nuances and linguistic implications of your game’s name in different regions. Secure Your Trademark EarlyApply for your trademark as early as possible. The process can be time-consuming, and early registration prevents potential conflicts and rebranding hassles. Filing early can grant you priority over others in many jurisdictions. This early bird strategy can be pivotal in avoiding costly disputes. In some countries, you can file a provisional application, securing your filing date while giving you additional time to complete your application. Once you file, you can start using the ™ symbol with your game’s name, indicating your intent to protect it as a trademark. Monitor and Enforce Your TrademarkProtecting a trademark is an ongoing process. Developers need to monitor their trademarks and enforce their rights to prevent unauthorized use, especially as they expand into global markets. This is crucial in maintaining the integrity and value of their brand. Leverage Your TrademarkFinally, remember that a trademark is not just legal protection, it’s a branding tool. Use it in marketing and promotions to build a unique identity for your game, foster brand loyalty and recognition among gamers. It can open doors to licensing opportunities, merchandising, and collaborations, thereby enhancing revenue streams and market presence.
